Your tripTu viaje

Mandawa is in Shekhawati, a region of Rajasthan often called the world’s largest open-air art gallery. In the 18th and 19th centuries, its merchant families built grand havelis (mansions around courtyards) and covered them, inside and out, with frescoes of gods, horses, trains and travellers. We’ll celebrate in one of these havelis.

  • Tue 9 Feb · Early eveningMar 9 feb · Al atardecerMehndi BaithakMehndi Baithak. Henna night. Henna stands for joy, beauty and good luck, so the bride and groom’s hands and feet are covered in delicate designs (they say the deeper the colour, the deeper the love). Artists will paint your hands too, if you like, while folk musicians play and we all dance on the lawn.
A blessing of turmeric. Family and friends smear turmeric paste on the bride and groom: it’s believed to bring luck, keep away the evil eye and give them a glow before the wedding. It’s joyfully messy, so everyone ends up a little yellow!
A night of music and dance (“sangeet” means music), when the families come together before the wedding. It begins with the baraat, the groom’s joyful procession: David arrives with his family and friends, all dancing him in to the beat of dhol drums, and the bride’s family welcomes them. Traditionally, the baraat is the groom’s side, but the bride’s side is welcome to join in too! Then everyone sits down around the sacred fire for the ceremony. You’ll receive a booklet to recite the verses together. The bride and groom walk around the sacred fire together, making their promises, while the guests shower them with petals and blessings. Indian outfitsRopa india

Keen to try Indian clothes? We’d love that, and they’re easier than they look. Here are a few outfits, by the names the shops use:¿Te apetece probar la ropa india?

You don’t need a full Indian outfit to blend in. Indian dressing loves maximalism: layer a brocade or any beautiful textile you have at home (jackets, scarves, skirts, anything) with lots of jewellery, chains, rings and heirlooms. India has hundreds of crafts and everyone at our wedding will look different, so make the look your own.

For men, a kurta over any trousers, or a Nehru jacket over a shirt, works just as well.
